13th floor RIP – my corner

Just over six and a half years ago I stopped being a CIO and drove for Lyft for a month. It was a pretty fun month. I was still being paid like I was a CIO and just needed to get out of the house. I could make my own hours, liked driving around, could pick the areas I would drive in. I met some very interesting people during that month. Stories for another post.

At the same time, I was looking for a new job, because, alas, in the US, severance pay does not last forever. Thankfully I landed a job back in IT with a software start up company with a bunch of folks I had worked with in the past. I carved out a little corner of the 13th floor of the Keith building that looked a little bit like this:

We were growing quickly and it was exciting times.

Then we all went home for, what we were told at the time, would just be a couple of weeks. After three years, we are back in the office, but in a hybrid mode, so we still have lots of people that wfh which makes 4 floors of office space superfluous.

So this week I closed the 13th floor, pulling all the tech off of it. We had been using it for all hands meetings but we have been acquired and will no longer be doing company meetings as the old company. So, for financial reasons I don’t understand (or care to understand), no one is allowed on the 13th floor anymore.

But it will always be a nice reminder for me. I took this as I was ripping down the last wireless access point from the ceiling. Good Times. My corner.
