we were having some issues with bedtime since the boy and girl moved into the same room, so the boy came up with a solution. when everything is done (books, hugs, teeth brushed, etc) and it is time for them to go to bed we set a timer for five or ten or fifteen minutes, depending on the variables of that particular evening. while the timer is going they have to stay in bed but we can talk, they can arrange their stuffed animals, etc. once the timer is done there is no more talking (they get one warning but we rarely have to use it anymore) and they are supposed to go to sleep. if they follow the plan and don’t get more than one warning they earn a star on a chart which they can use to redeem things. the plan has been working swimmingly and they have earned quite a few stars, the first thing they redeemed was an afternoon of putt putt golf, as seen below.
